Hair Clippers

Hair clippers are usually one of the tools of the trade for barbers and hair dressers but really they can be bought anywhere. Giving your family haircuts at home isn't a very common practice, but I suppose as the price of haircuts go up and unemployment rises that more people may turn to that. It's probably more common among people who what a haircut like a mohawk or flat top, if you want one of those haircuts then electric hair clippers allow you to do it at home. There's really no need to go to a barber or hair stylist and pay $15 or $20 for such a cut. It's probably not something women will do either, they tend to have more complicated haircuts then men and it's done with scissors and razors much of the time, at least that's how I get my hair cut. I suppose if you had a short hairstyle you could do it, but it seems to be mostly men cutting their hair at home.

I suppose the whole modern “cut your hair at home” craze was kicked off by the Flowbee. You may remember it from late night commercials and advertisements. Basically it was a clipper powered by the suction of your vacuum cleaner. You had different attachments to control the length on the sides or top. Believe it or not the thing is still around. It has it's own web page advertising that you can get a refreshing vacuum hair cut. No kidding! Actually though, cutting your hair at home, at least for boys was done pretty commonly in the old days. My husbands grandfather used to have a pair of hand clippers he'd cut his boys hair with. You can look at pictures of my husbands uncles and see the same haircut on all the boys. My husbands mother used to cut his hair too when he was a little boy, until my father in law made some crack about how it looked. Anyway, if you're looking for professional hair clippers, you can probably get good recommendations from your hair stylist or barber. You could find instructions on how to cut hair with clippers on the internet, you can even find videos all over YouTube. Most of these cuts are simple “buzz” cuts or not much more complicated than that, cuts that would work on men or boys, not women.

Beard and Nose Hair Trimmers

Cutting your own hair isn't the only reason to have a pair of hair clippers. My husband uses cordless hair clippers to trim his beard, and so do a lot of other men. These rechargeable hair clippers are really designed to be beard trimmers, the cutter is a little less wide than barber hair clippers. You could probably cut your hair with them if they were fully charged. Some men and women also use them to do a little landscaping “down there” if you know what I mean. Mens hair clippers specifically for beards would work too I'd imagine. You can also find nose hair clippers, sometimes beard trimmers have attachments that will help do this. The nose hair trimmers are usually round with a small tip that you put up your nostril. It works in a similar way to other hair clippers just with a round cutting area.

We have a set of Wahl hair clippers for cutting our dogs hair. We have a golden retriever that needs trimming around her ears and toes, and we do that with a set of electric hair clippers. I wouldn't use the rechargeable kind of bear trimmers, because her hair is just too thick, sometimes the hair cut clippers have a hard time getting through it when it's matted. These aren't any special “pet” clippers, they're just regular clippers for human hair. Retrievers usually get a “cut” instead of just getting shaved, although you can do that too. They look kind of funny though, although they might appreciate it if they live in a really warm climate. That's probably something you won't mind doing yourself, your dog won't mind how he or she looks, although they might not enjoy the process. We have the only retriever in the world the world that hates water, so going to get groomed is not her favorite process.
